Rule of Two-Thirds

I'd like your opinion on something. Let's call it the "Sidewalk Squeeze". Your typical Wallingford sidewalk is three squares wide, each square measuring 2' across. That adds up to a healthy 6' of breadth, enough that someone stumbling home from a late night at the Leny's or the Grizzled Wizard can do a bit of weaving without trampling anyone's lawn. But, of course, Wallingford is home to many a healthy garden and a bevy of bushes, many of which encroach on…

Meridian Knockdown

The saga of the old house at 41st and Meridian has a new chapter: this morning, bulldozers showed up and knocked her down. The house itself has been unoccupied for as long as I can remember, at least a decade if not two. For a long time, the lawn was carefully mowed and hedges trimmed (although they were allowed to slowly consume an old 1950's era car, creating an unintentional bit of yard art), but the interior was hidden behind curtains.…

Today (May 10) is the Seattle Foundation's annual GiveBIG event, a one-day online charitable fiesta. Over 1,700 non-profits are participating, with over 600 having secured $1:$1 matching funds for donations made today, so it's a great opportunity to double the impact of your donation. Visit GiveBIG's website to find an organization that is working on issues you care about. It is that time of year again!  Time for green garlic, tender baby lettuces, spicy radishes and sweet carrots. Time to secure your annual CSA farm share membership.   I have been a member of the Oxbow Farms CSA for three years. I love establishing my commitment to a single farm early in the year and knowing my investment helps to plan their growing season. It is important to me to contribute to the regional food system, and I appreciate the opportunity…

[Editor Note: May 7th is the deadline for comments to the city on future Green Lake repaving. Jack links to the survey below, but it is time sensitive so I thought it wise to add this quick note.] Those of us living in the vicinity of 40th St. know that crossing 40th on foot or bike -- especially during rush hours -- can be challenging. Now, thanks to SDOT's Neighborhood Street Fund and citizen action by some of our neighbors, improvements are…

The Wallingford Community Council continues to play a strong role in the community such as the recent Tenants' Rights Bootcamp. As with most players in local Seattle politics, the Community Council also has its detractors. Now is your chance to get involved with the Council and have your say in its future. However, you will have to act fast to vote in the election for officers and directors at the meeting on May 17th. To vote in the election, you must…

Bring Up the Sun, Bring In Summer! It’s been a long winter. As if the post-election pall weren’t bad enough, we’ve broken the 122-year-old record for wettest winter, and another record for the sheer number of wet days between October and April. How do you cope with such dismal weather? Take excessive doses of Vitamin D? Book a trip someplace sunny? Complain while binge-watching Netflix? How about getting up before dawn on May 1st to bring in the summer! It may sound…
