Dogs as asset and liability in Woodland Park

Seattle has ramped up enforcement of dog laws.  A park ranger and two animal control officers are patrolling high-complaint city parks on a rolling basis for violations of animal control laws including off leash citations, missing dog tags, and lack of waste bags.  The fees related to these citations can add up quickly. Woodland Park, location of Wallyhood's local off leash dog park,  is one of three high complaint parks to be targeted.  So be aware next time you head out…

“What is an Urban Village?” …said the blissfully ignorant me

In January of this year, the Wallingford Community Council convened a meeting to educate the neighborhood on changes to zoning and housing policies that could have drastic effects on our neighborhood and our city.  I attended, as did many others (around 200 were in attendance).  At this meeting, I asked the person next to me, “What is an Urban Village?”  (Keep reading if you have had the same question). Since that meeting I have dived in with both feet (which at…

Wallingford ranks 11th in number of car prowls

According to police data, Wallingford ranks 11th in number of car prowls among Seattle's neighborhoods, behind Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, and Ballard, to name a few. I'm not surprised Wallingford shows up near the top of the list, it seems like I hear about a new incident every day. Wallingford resident Susan Gilmore recounts her recent experience: My car was prowled not once but twice last week.  They took my husband's swimming bag and the disabled pass we have for my MIL. That's…

Crime, Some of the Time

Here's a random assortment of crime updates, replete with photographic evidence: First, breaking (breaking!) right now, lots of folks have been asking about the huge police presence at the corner of 45th and Stone Way, complete with helicopters. According to Gwydion on Facebook: "I just spoke with an officer. Someone just robbed Verity Credit Union. White male, 30s, wearing all black, red shoes. On foot, may still be in the area." Then, over on 4th Ave NE by I-5, Brandi reports: "Bike…

CSA’s that Deliver to Wallingford

Every year (more or less), I publish a list of the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) that deliver to the Wallingford neighborhood. I used my 2014 guide as a reference, so it was interesting to see the things that had changed. Tiny's Organics doesn't look like they offer a CSA-type program anymore, and both Boistfort Valley Farm and CityGrown Seattle have already sold out (although CityGrown will still be selling through their farmstand at 4108 Eastern Ave N on Saturdays from 10 -…

We don't get enough author readings in Wallingford. Or at least not enough that I hear about. And certainly not enough with musical accompaniment. How about at a bar, where you can order a drink? Enough of those? No, not enough. So great, here we go: this Friday, May 13th Katy Bourne will be reading from Weirdo Simpatico, Little Stories for Short Attention Spans at the Seamonster Lounge (2202 N. 45th St) from 5 - 5:30 pm. Bassist Paul Gabrielson will improvise…

Fighting Poster Blight

I don't know about you, but the sight of deteriorating posters on the telephone and public utility poles in Wallingford drives me crazy. One man's advertising is our neighborhood's blight.  I just think of the broken window theory every time I see the old posters hanging from poles. I've even taken the time to go out and peel off the 1-2" thick layer of posters with my kids.  They thought it was fun. At a recent Wallingford Chamber of Commerce meeting…
