As Atoma celebrates their one-year anniversary of bringing a fine dining experience to Wallingford, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight what I believe this restaurant brings to the local community.      Mark your calendars—Atoma’s one-year anniversary is November 5th! Last November, Johnny and Sarah Courtney opened Atoma in the compact former Craftsman where Tilth pioneered organic dining and won a James Beard Award. Johnny’s culinary resume is full of cred, but his four years in the Canlis kitchen are…

Dealing with Election Anxiety

Feeling stressed out by the election Tuesday? We hear a lot of folks are. A fellow from Pittsburgh being interviewed on the news Friday said, “I’ve been voting for 40 years but this year I feel like the weight of the world’s future is on my shoulders.” And that may be true for Pennsylvania’s voters. But here in Washington we are facing similarly consequential choices with the four initiatives on the ballot. If you feel the need to de-stress a little,…

Wallyhood Non-Endorsements for 2024

We at Wallyhood understand that many of you depend on this blog to guide you through the complexities of life: where to eat, what to wear, what to laugh at, what to believe, etc. I decided to channel my inner spirit animal, Jeff Bezos, who is also a frequent visitor to my Wallingford residence— judging by the plethora of empty and repurposed Amazon boxes that litter the place—to explain why, in this most consequential election season, Wallyhood has opted to make…

As the retail core in the Wallingford Center has been diminished, I am glad one of the remaining business fixtures in Wallingford that I enjoy shopping for my wife and still standing is Yazdi.  The store, located on the second floor of the Wallingford Center has been a fixture for 38 years and counting.  As you enter the Wallingford Center and approach Yazdi, looking up you get a sense of something unique about Yazdi.  The beautiful dragon tapestry (George the Dragon,…

Impact of proposed new zoning maps on Wallingford

  • Post author:

Mayor Bruce Harrell has recently released proposed rezoning maps as part of the Comprehensive Plan updates. Interactive zoning maps can be found here, so you can look up what is specific to your block (that’s what we all want to know, right?). These draft maps are currently open for public comment before being up for review by the City Council in early 2025. Many of these zoning changes are required to be in compliance with Housing Bill 1110 (HB 1110), often…

Spooktacular Events in Wallingford This Weekend 🎃👻

When we first moved to Wallingford, the previous homeowners warned us to stock up on LOTS of candy—and they weren't kidding! Every year, around 100 costumed kiddos visit our house. If you want to partake, this is your friendly reminder to get some candy before the shelves at QFC and CVS are bare.  As a parent of young kids who have their costumes planned for the next three years, I can’t get enough of the Halloween spirit. Inspired by Gary’s story…
