Wallyhood Mug: Get it to go!

We've gotten such a great response to our Wallyhood Mugs that we've decided to ask Irwin's and A Muddy Cup to help sell a few on our behalf.  And being the super-awesome neighborhood coffee places that they are, they agreed!  So if you missed out on ordering a mug from us last month, now's your chance to get your very own.  Maybe it's just me being biased at all, but they've got a great feel to them:  they're ceramic with a…

Off The Wall School Of Music

If you travel on 45th just above Stone Way, you might've seen the Off The Wall School of Music "Free Piano Lesson" sandwich board on the sidewalk and the giant banner on the side of a blue house on the corner of 45th and Midvale.  I'll admit, when I looked up the music school, I balked at the website's claim, "You can learn a song in 15-20 minutes!"  See, I've been taking piano lessons for the last four years and the…

Wallingford Weekend

For this week's "Wallingford Weekend", we offer two bits of goings on in the day and two bits of goings on at night. For the time in between, we suggest a short snooze. Friday night, as we explained at length earlier this week, Ben Lerner will be reading at Open Books on Friday night at 7:30 pm. Beat a (mean free) path to his door. Saturday day, the Sound and Fury Morris Dancers will be wassailing at Meridian Playfield, starting at…

Come Wassail Away

Used to be, when I thought of wassailing, I'd picture Christmas carolers in full Victorian-era costume, going door-to-door to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  But in reality, as I've come to learn, wassailing is a centuries-old English tradition, with one form that's deeply-rooted in apple trees. Apple Wassailing dates back to the 16th century, though some may believe the tradition began as a Pagan ritual. This type of wassailing is to pay homage to apple trees…

Wallybits: Real Estate Edition

Here's some (okay, two) bite-sized pieces of real estate news around the neighborhood: The Matchless Building (3640-3650 Wallingford Avenue N.) has been sold for $2.15 million.  Co-Star Realty reports that the 1924 8-unit, two-story building, which houses Cantinetta and the Oasis Art Gallery on the ground floor, was sold to private investors. Key Bank is opening a Wallingford branch on May 16, 2011.  The branch will be located at 1702 N. 45th St., which was formerly offices for the commercial real…

Finalizing Transfer Station Designs

The preferred transfer station rebuild option will be chatted through tonight at the Wallingford Community Council, at 7 PM in room 202 of the Good Shepherd Center. A key question is if there’s a rezone, what amenities would make up for it? I personally would love to see a visitor space for school classes, but I’m biased by my youth. The highlight of going to school in Virginia is the school field trip to the cigarette factory- all those little cancer…

Ben Lerner’s Mean Free Path

Matt Lerner's brother is giving a reading at Open Books (2414 N 45th St) this Friday night at 7:30 pm. Now, ordinarily, when Ben Lerner gives readings, the press starts off by noting that the Fulbright scholar won the Hayden Carruth prize for his cycle of 52 sonnets, The Lichtenberg Figures, or that his second book, Angle of Yaw, was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2006, or perhaps that Library Journal named The Lichtenberg Figures one of the…
