Wally-ween Weekend – For Grownups

(Updated 4:12 p.m.) Since Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, it's become an Über holiday--jam-packed with activities all weekend long--kinda giving people more bang for their buck in the costume department.  Now at least you can justify getting that cat suit cleaned before wearing it.  Better hurry though, because we've found a ton of activities for grownups, including lots of costume parties and contests.(Parents, don't worry, we'll cover the Halloween festivities for the Wally-wee set in a separate post!) Friday,…

Stone Soup Theater’s Latest Who-dunnit

Tonight, Stone Soup Theater (4035 Stone Way North) will preview its newest production -- The Real Inspector Hound and The Boundary, a "play within a play" comedy murder-mystery, directed by Zachariah Robinson.  The production will run Thursdays through Sundays beginning tonight (10/28), until November 21. Here's a summary from Stone Soup: Two theatre critics, Birdboot & Moon attend a performance of a British, 'who-dunnit.'  The mystery is set in the 1920's at a weekend party at Muldoon Manor, where 'all roads…

Toy Swap ‘n’ Sale

On a daily basis I look around my house and wonder why I have multiple bins, toy chests, and baskets full of toys.  I try to conquer and organize, but the task is endless.  Just yesterday I went through my son’s toys and got a bag together to donate, eliminating some of the clutter while thinking that the amount of toys my kid winds up with is astonishing, and it'll just continue to grow if I don’t take a stand.  Seems…

Paying it forward

The other day, Wallingford neighbor Beth posted something on the Wallingford Moms site that caught my eye:  A group of parents have gotten together to host a fundraiser at Tutta Bella (4411 Stone Way N.) on Thursday, November 4 (from 5:50 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.) for Diane Broderick--a beloved co-op preschool teacher who had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  I e-mailed Beth and she provided me with more details: Diane has been teaching preschool co-op for over twenty years and…

Helping those in need: Wallingford House

Wallyhood reader Kimberly C. writes: With all the discussion going on about homelessness and Wallingford, I thought maybe it would be nice to feature some of the organizations in Wallingford that provide services to the homeless. The ones I know about are: FamilyWorks/Solid Ground and the 45th Street Clinic. Perhaps a volunteer profile as well? Seems like a lot of interest in what is being done locally and organizations to support other than SHARE. Thanks, Kimberly We thought this was a…

A Muddy Cup, Comics Dungeon Burglarized

Last night around 11:30 p.m., the police came to Sarah Dolezal's home to inform her that her store, A Muddy Cup (266 NE 45th St.), had just been burglarized.  Someone had thrown a rock through the door and shattered the glass to break in.  Police informed Dolezal that someone had also broken into Comics Dungeon (250 NE 45th St.). Dolezal wrote to let me know that they're still open for business, "just a little shaken." She and her partner Mathew spent…

Amblin’ Down Ashworth

Check it out:  Molly Moon's totally empty.  There is absolutely nobody here but me.  Unnerving. Uh oh.  Somebody has dropped their soccer drills.  What's the team practicing instead? In the pale early evening sky, a pale very nearly full moon appears. Thousands of powdery whitish-blue insects float ever upward.  Only today - they were all born at once and they'll all be gone tomorrow. A secret stash filled with bags of dog poop.  Why? What a retro classic.  Doesn't that look…
