Art Walk Additions and Corrections

Yesterday we said that today's Wallingford Art Walk would be the last of the season. It will not. Unlike the last few years, when Art Walk took a winter break, they're going to try to run it throughout the winter this year. Tara will be taking over in December. It's not 100% clear to us who chairing it next month (Colleen and Alex, the existing chairs, are stepping down after today's Art Walk and Tara isn't taking over until December), but…

Can Your Halloween Pin Win?

We were trolling through the Wallingford Center in search of mini cupcakes (they are hard to get hold of) when we happened upon this flier about a Halloween Pin Design Contest. Now, my daughter has a weird knack of winning contests.  She's won quite a few already as if sheer determination to win is enough.  Her eyes lit up and I could see her planning what to draw . . . . It's only fair, though, to have decent competition or…

Last week tolled the bell for the final Wallingford Farmers Market of 2010, and this week we ring out a year of Wallingford Art Walk. Tomorrow, Wednesday October 6th from 6 - 9 pm marks your last opportunity to stroll the avenues and alleys of Wallingford as if it were Paris in the Spring, popping into galleries to admire the works of artists while sipping on a glass* of wine and chatting with your neighbors. Where should you stroll? Here's what…

We were perusing the New York Times magazine this morning, moving with the gentle lethargy of a man with three-quarters of a cup of coffee left to drink, when what should we find but a vicious attack on our writing style. It began: Theodore Rockwell, who served as technical director for the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-propulsion program in the 1950s and ’60s, shared a telling anecdote about his onetime boss, the famously irascible Adm. Hyman G. Rickover. “One time he caught me…

Hamilton’s Community Celebration

While Saturday’s Community Celebration at Hamilton International Middle School had a little lower turnout than the ribbon cutting ceremony, there were still plenty of students eager to show parents their lockers and classrooms during the open house. Visitors had access to all three floors of the school and were treated to the sounds of Hamilton’s marimba ensemble on the outside courts, as well as the jazz band that played in their own classroom on the ground floor. Have a look inside the…

Hurley House

Walk into Joe's house, and you can see through walls. You may remember the spot the house stands on: right across from Mosaic Coffeehouse, between 1st and 2nd Ave NE, we covered back in early 2009 when they knocked down the tiny old house that stood on the property previously. We can't find a link to our post from the time, but Google Maps remembers what it looks like, and if you want a piece of it, just head down to…

Can You Spare a (Free) Dime?

This arrived in our Wallyhood inbox some weeks ago and it was so lovely we had to share: Hello, While waiting at the 45th street crosswalk in front of QFC Saturday, an elderly man asked me to look at the curb that separates the QFC parking lot from the sidewalk. That started a lengthy, disjointed, yet still interesting, trail of stories.  They ranged from someone tearing his shirts in the laundry room where he lives, to his Dad being a cop in the 'hood, to…
