Neighborhood Roundup

Today I serve as your virtual Gladys Kravitz.  Here's the scoop: Fremont Universe took advantage of Geeky Swedes' insomnia, reporting the Sunday morning fire aboard the Arctic Ice, a Deadliest Catch boat docked near the Ship Canal bridge. MyGreenlake's Amy Duncan reports that the City of Seattle  is seeking community input regarding the budget crunch.  The north Seattle public hearing is Wednesday, Sept 29th near Northgate.  Amy has the details here. CHS Capitol Hill Seattle published a nice little piece about…

Transfer Station Design Workshop Tuesday

Update and correction:  the meeting will be held at ISB's administrative offices in Fremont (837 N. 34th Street) and NOT at the labs across from the transfer station.  837 N. 34th Street is the building near the Fremont Bridge, right behind the JP Patches statue.  Hat tip to Allison. Seattle Public Utilities is holding its next stakeholder group workshop relating to the new North Transfer Station (NTS) on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Institute for Systems…

Get Your Game On! Go Seahawks!

The National Football League's preseason games are intended to test out new players, practice schemes, and get everyone conditioned for the upcoming season.  On the theory that fans need some conditioning, too, I spent a recent preseason game day checking out a few 45th street bars/restaurants to determine my own game plan for enjoying the 2010 Seahawks season. Here's what I learned, walking east from 45th & Stone during commercial breaks: 1) Blue Star Cafe.  I ordered my beer during the…

Oddities Along Wallingford Ave.

Unquestionably the strangest item I have ever seen put out for free on the curb.  A box decorated like a giant red dice.  My mind boggles at the motivation for creating it and the use its future owner will put it to.  I don't question that it will soon have a future owner. The easy way to exercise your dog.  Leash it to your bike and go for a ride. Welcome back wacky, wonderful Wallingford wurst wizard! Whole lotta stickers goin'…

SHARE Homeless Shelter coming to Gift of Grace Church

I found out last night from a neighbor that SHARE is opening an indoor homeless shelter at the Gift of Grace Lutheran Church in Wallingford (2102 North 40th Street). SHARE is Seattle Housing and Resource Effort. According to its website, SHARE is a partner organization of homeless and formerly homeless men and women that provides King County's largest shelter network, with fifteen indoor shelters and two tent cities. All their efforts are self-managed, run by the homeless members themselves. In addition, the organization…

The Street Treats truck is coming!

As a kid growing up in the suburbs, hearing the jingling bells of the ice cream truck was one of the best things about summer.  Living in a tract housing development that had 2.5 children for every home, our purchases were easily the driver’s entire take for the day.  We’d be in the middle of a kickball game in the cul-de-Sac, or building a fort in the back yard when the bells beckoned us to drop whatever it was we were…
