Grab It, It’s Free!

I saw this working VCR the other day put out on the curb with a free sign: Reminded me of all the things I've put out, and also picked up around the neighborhood.  What was the best thing you've ever put out or picked up? Right after we moved in we realized the coffee table didn't fit the living room and, being exhausted, left it out at the curb with a "Free" sign.  It was gone within 10 minutes.  The best…

Farmer’s Market Reminder

It's almost humpday!  Which means it's time again for the Wallingford Farmers Market in the Wallingford Center parking lot, Wednesday 3 - 7 p.m. Hardworking local farmers and craftsmen bring a colorful assortment of fresh seasonal fruits, veggies, meats, breads, and all sorts of other delicious edibles.  Last week, one vendor told me that the cherries are just about done for the year, so be sure to snap some up if you spot them.  Afterwards, step inside Wallingford Center where participating…

Missing Pooch?

Jessica just wrote: There's a black (dark brown) female (we think) pit bull mix (also a guess) with bright green collar and tags around the intersection of Meridian Ave N and N 38th Street. She seems very nice but is very nervous. Neighbors are working to gain her trust and figure out where she belongs, but it's not clear how long she'll stick around. If she's yours, head down or e-mail us at [email protected] for contact info.

Canning and Pickling

Have you heard about the Canvolution? It swept the blognation this past summer: a revival of the lost arts of canning, jarring, pickling and preserving. After reading about it on Tigress in a Jam (and after tasting some of Grandpa Wallyhood's delicious Concord grape preserves), Mrs. Wallyhood challenged herself this past year: she would can or preserve one food item per month. The first month, it was Ginger Pear Preserves (delicious and empowering: if she could pull that off, she was…

Blackberries Along The Burke

If you’ve noticed people gingerly poking around the brambles alongside the Burke Gilman Trail, chances are they’ve spotted patches of ripened wild blackberries. Our little band of berry pickers biked down to the Trail today and found a lush spot parallel to Dunato’s Marine Services and Supply.  Though it looked like most of the brambles had already been picked clean, there were still plenty of places underneath for little hands to reach. Blackberry picking requires skillful hands to reach around the…

Art Stuck on Poles

"First we look at the hills in the painting, Then we look at the painting in the hills." - Li Liweng, 17th century On 45th Street.  I consider this street art.  Some may call it graffiti. The badge says "Hello My Name Is Douchebag Californian".  Near Paper Delights. Beneath the poster of Japanese manga warrior babe, the badge says "Hello My Name Is Oops I'm Sorry".  Near Harold's Lighting. Tree shrine.  Chalkboard reads "I want to make world peace.  I want…

The Low-Down on “Get Low”

Set yourself down and enjoy an evening with Robert Duvall was the take-home message for audiences interviewed as they were exiting Get Low, the new movie at The Guild.  You could do a lot worse than spend some time in the company of his stern magnificence: "Liked it a lot.  Great.  Robert Duvall deserves a Best Actor Oscar.  Has he won one before or just Supporting Actor?  It was a showcase for him.  Great, great role for him." - Greg "Hard…
