Wallingford Weekend

Labor Day Weekend is upon us, marking the end of outdoor festivals, movies, and block parties. It’s a time when we honor thy mighty Bumbershoot and prep the outdoor grill for that last barbecue. While many plan to get the heck out of Dodge for that last long weekend until…Thanksgiving (Ugh, really? Is the next one that far away?), we’ve got some suggestions for those who plan to stick around: Thursday, 9/2 (Still a weeknight, but worth mentioning): 8 PM –…

Hamilton’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Hundreds of people--from neighbors, students and faculty, to Seattle Public School Board Members--came out during this gorgeous, cloudless morning for the ribbon cutting ceremony at Hamilton International Middle School.  Members from the Hamilton Marimba Band welcomed guests with a fun and festive piece called “Mardi Gras.” Principal Christopher Carter began the ceremony, thanking everyone involved and said he was thrilled to be leaving their temporary home at Lincoln High School,  “with all due respect,” he added with a wry grin. Pooches Off Leash at the Park? You May Wanna Think Twice

Wallyreader jimmereno asked the following questions in the Forums the other day: Can anybody tell me how much the fines are for dog owners who get nabbed by the dog detectives who stop by the playfield? Do repeat offenders pay more? Are there additional fines for unlicensed pets? So, we looked up the Seattle Municipal Code and here’s the scoop: It is a violation of SMC 18.12.080 to have a dog on an athletic playfield or designated children’s play area on…

Some friends and I went to the inaugural event two weeks ago, and it was great fun. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it last week due to work conflicts, and was sad to hear the turnout could've been better. So here I am, urging you to…

Celebrate the Harvest with Tilth

"whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6:7) And if he soweth green beans, cherry tomatoes and zucchini in Seattle, then it's time to reap and celebrate! Seattle Tilth's annual Harvest Fair will be Saturday, September 11th from 10 AM to 5 PM in the picnic shelter and lawns behind the Good Shepherd Center.  (That's right, on 9/11.  Let's try to affirm life and counterbalance the sadness of the anniversary). Have some old-fashioned fun while learning something new…

Land Use, The Dump, and the Community Council

If you’ve ever played Sim City you know zoning is critically important for a vibrant community, at least until disaster strikes. And if you’ve ever been the victim of a mega-house going up next door, you know how complicated enforcement can be. Can they really turn their entire street frontage into one big driveway? Is it really OK for them to build a 3rd story that shades you during the day and is lit from the outside at night? Well then,…
