Wallingford Art Walk

Last month, we found Wallingford Art Walk to be something of a disappointment. We were not alone. Not to say there weren't some fine artists on display, good music to be had and the requisite nibbles and wine, but what was disappointing was the number of businesses that had signed up, but failed to actually book an artist and participate. We hope this month will be better. We'll tell you what we know of, so, should you decide to venture out,…

Blue Angels Back in Town

"There will be closures to the I-90 bridge next week so the Blue Angels can terrorize Lake Washington,"  says lower Wallingford worker bee Stephen Parris.  I couldn't say it better myself, so I didn't. Road closures really shouldn't affect Wallingford much but if you're headed east, or if you're passing through town Thursday-Sunday, be sure to check out the traffic details here. If you're a fan of the Blue Angels, your best bets for catching glimpses of them from right here…

Congratulations Maria Hines!

Tilth Organic Cuisine chef Maria Hines kicked some ass and won her match against Iron Chef Morimoto on last night's airing of Iron Chef America.  What a sweet win for this young James Beard Award winner.   A hearty congratulations to Ms. Hines and to her talented sous chefs, Larkin Young and Jason Brzozowy. Hines' natural style and organic cooking lent themselves to a compost joke in the show's opening moments.  Then it was all business.  The secret ingredient didn't hurt:…

Suspected Bank Robber Nabbed in Wallingford

North Crime Prevention Coordinator Diane Horswill tells us that a suspect in the July 26th Key Bank robbery was arrested at the Wallingford Playfield last Friday.  We suspected as much Friday morning, and now our hunch is confirmed. The arrest was made thanks to the keen eye of newly appointed Community Police Team (CPT) Officer Loren Street. CPT officers work a little differently than patrols cops.  Rather than respond to 911 calls, they are assigned to specific areas or neighborhoods with…

Bye Zeb!

If you've been annoyed by the graffiti that seems to appear regularly around the neighborhood, take some cheer. Twenty-one year old Samuel F. Lehtinen was booked into jail a couple weeks back, accused (and caught paint-handed) of being the vandal spraypainting "Zeb" all of Seattle and Portland. Here's a few images of his handiwork, shot by Jeff over at Bedrooms & More: Have fun spraypainting the inside of your cell.

Wine World in Wallingford? Whoopee!

Brady spotted this little tidbit on EveryBlock: WINE WORLD WAREHOUSE applied for new liquor license. We made a call, but before we could get the info, we were scooped by The Puget Sound Business Journal, which reported that the former Office Max space on 45th will soon be converted into what could be the largest wine store in the Northwest, slated to open this fall.  According to the Journal: The 23,000-square-foot Wine World, in the Wallingford area, will include a pair…

House up High

If you've walked down the 4400 block of Thackery recently, you may have noticed a house floating above the ground. Peg offers an explanation: I've had a few people tell me that my house (4400 blk of Thackeray) is looking like something out of the Wizard of Oz these days. The great design/build firm JAS (neighborhood loved and located!) is putting my house on a firmer foundation - namely a basement!!! The house - she's 100 years old this year --…
