More Senior Center News

The Seattle Times ran an article today on the impending closing of the Wallingford Senior Center that includes some more background on the situation. Apparently, the center, which was founded in 1979 and serves 1,500 people, is in arrears to the tune of $70,000. It's annual budget of $300,000 comes from a mix of public and private funding. Unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, the 40% they've traditionally raised from private donors has shrunk to 13%: "The senior center…

Notes from the Playground – A Slippery Slope

(Sharon continues her Notes from the Playground series) I may have mentioned before how great we think the playground is at Wallingford Park. It's cool that there are two play structures, side by side, so both toddlers and older ones can do their thing, but still mingle. I especially like how the blue squishy stuff underneath it makes me feel so safe, since my son, like most three year olds, has taken his share of tumbles there. Tunnel slide by Mike…

The Wallingford library branch has finished its remodel and re-opened! Jayanne writes: I dropped in to see the Wallingford branch library, which re-opened on September 8 after a two month closure for refurbishing.  The branch apparently now has a faster Internet connection, new carpet and paint, an additional computer, photocopier, a stand alone self-checkout station, and a refreshed large-print and paperback selection. The space also was apparently redesigned for more efficient workflow and ease of access (though I kind of miss…

Happy Birthday Essential Baking Cafe

This report sent in by Lower Wallingford Correspondent, Chris Witwer. I've posted things in the past that reference Essential Baking Cafe on 34th street, and when I gave folks directions to the Baby Maarten Yard Sale drop off I started by saying "You know where Essential Baking is...?" and everyone did.  But I don't think we've given them their own Wallyhood blog post yet.  So here's our excuse to do so: Wallingford's own Essential Baking Cafe is celebrating their 15th anniversary…

Last Farmers Market Tomorrow

Rainbow at the Market Originally uploaded by SRDaly And THIS is why you might want to rent one of those apartments in the second floor of Wallingford Center. You'd get to take great photos like the one at right, taken by SRDaly and submitted to the Wallingford Flickr pool. Remember, the last Wallingford Farmers Market of the season is tomorrow, Wednesday September 30th from 3 - 7 pm. After that, you'll be pulling turnips from barren fields for your breakfast.

Postering

Chris sent in a reminder that postering is legal in Seattle. Apparently, some self-appointed pole cleaners have been pulling down signs unwarranted, including those for the Wallingford Walks. We've noticed that our Wallyhood signs tend to disappear from any pole on 45th St within hours, it seems, of going up, which is a frustration. We believe this blog is a useful service to the community, and whoever is "cleaning" 45th St is, in effect, depriving people of a free, useful news…

Wallingford Community Center

Wallingford Community Center, you ask? What Wallingford Community Center? Indeed! Phinney Ridge has its amazing Phinney Neighborhood Center, Ballard has a community Center, Laurelhurst has a community center. In fact, it seems like all the cool kids have a community center. What about Wallingford? Well, it seems our turn may be up. There is a belief among the Wallingford leadership that the city may be finding a spot in its budget to help Wallingford create a neighborhood community center. If so,…
