Wallingford student awarded for ‘Neighbor’ art

Mayor Mike McGinn and Seattle Councilmember Mike O'Brien were at Hamilton International Middle School yesterday to honor the top 15 winners of the 2011 Neighbor Appreciation Day Student Art Contest. Three of the budding artists are students at Hamilton, including one winner, Page Victoria Robinson, who lives in Wallingford.  The winning drawings reflect what it means to be a good neighbor, and Page was among five of the winners who were given a Crystal Award and art supplies. You can view…

Art Walk Wednesday

We're coming up on February, which means Wallingford Art Walk. For January's Art Walk, despite the chill, we saddled Baby Z up on our shoulders and wandered about the "downtown" Wallingford area: Wallingford Center, Not a Number, Fuel and such. There were lots of folks out on the street, but it wasn't clear how many were out for Art Walk. That said, we heard some good music in the Wallingford Center basement, had some good conversations with people we'd met on-line,…

Seattle Mosaic Arts designs oven for Golden Beetle

When Maria Hines decided to open a new restaurant in Ballard, she asked her friend Claire Barnett, owner of Seattle Mosaic Arts here in Wallingford, to design, create, and install a mosaic on the kitchen's stainless steel oven. Given the restaurant's open kitchen floor plan, the 26 square foot mosaic will be seen by anyone sitting at the bar or dining at a table facing the kitchen in the Golden Beetle. I met with Christina Vaule--one of the four women in…

TEDDYxWallingford

Back in October, we were inspired by TEDxRainier, a day of fascinating and inspiring talks by local geeks, chefs, visionaries, authors and do-gooders. What we enjoyed about the day wasn't just the series of talks themselves, each worth the price of admission in themselves, but the conversations between that the talks inspired. Of the talks, one stood out in particular: Michael Hebb argued that how we share food together is as important as what the food is or where it comes from.…

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of the year and the first Wednesday of the month, meaning it's Wallingford Art Walk, and the organizers have a special treat to lure you out. They've recruited local artists to create a collector's set of art work for the backs of the brand new maps of participating businesses. Collect 'em all! Along with Art Walk fridge magnets, they'll be available at some participating businesses, but especially at the "starting point" for the Art Walk, Wallingford…

Neighborhood Matching Funds

I recently wrote a quick post about the 46th Street Mural Project survey.  A commenter to that article, "walkinroun," indicated s/he isn't really that fond of the type of public art the mural produced, nor some of the other public art projects in Seattle.  I have to agree.  I mean, I like the Lady Bug and the Sea Turtle traffic circles, but think we could've done even more with them.  So here's our chance to create something different: Seattle Department of…

We were strolling down Eastern Ave the other day, between 41st and 42nd, when we happened by this: What in the world? One of the advantages of writing a neighborhood blog is that is affords you the perfect excuse to walk up to the doors of perfect strangers and ask them questions. Which is exactly what we did. The contraption to the right is the product of Gerry Chu, a robotics engineer at the UW. Previously, he was a researcher in…
