Goodbye to ‘The Publican’, hello to ‘The Burgundian’

Nope, The Publican isn't closing, folks. Can I get a collective "Pheeeeewwwww!" We just heard that due to some pesky legal issues involving The Publican in Chicago, The Publican in Tangletown (2253 N. 56th St.) has changed its name to The Burgundian Tavern. Last week, owner Matt Bonney told Seattle Met the reason he chose "Burgundian": The region between present-day Belgium and France long ago 'became known as a place for good food and good drink, and people from there were…

Changes Bar Asks for Help

Yesterday we received a reader tip from someone whose name I cannot discern from the email address.  The reader asked if we'd seen something on Facebook about Changes Bar on 45th Street here in Wallingford, and included the following link:  http://changesinwallingford.com/wp/blog/changes-in-wallingford-needs-your-help/ . It's a tab on Changes' official website for "Changes Petition" which states the following: "For the last 22 years Changes has been a much loved fixture in Wallingford and in the Seattle gay community.  Recently, new elements in the…

The Publican opens next month

Geoff Kaiser over at Seattle Beer News tells us that The Publican will open in mid- to late December in the former Bandolero spot (2253 N. 56th St.), which was sold to the guys behind Brouwer's Cafe and Bottleworks last month. According to Seattle Beer News, The Publican will have 22 taps along with a selection of bottled beer and a full bar for cocktails. They'll open at 10am daily and will serve breakfast (all day), lunch, and dinner. Matt Bonney (who runs Brouwer's Cafe) told Seattle Beer News:…

Free Schwag at Bandolero

We got this note from Tangletown's finest Mexican restaurant, Bandolero (2253 N 56th St): Throughout the past year, we've managed to collect lots of shwag from various beer and liquor companies and have neglected to hand it out to our fine patrons. Tonight we're going to remedy that and lay it all out on the table, literally.  Stop in any time after 5pm tonight and pick up some fancy glassware or a sexy t-shirt from our shwag table and help us clear out…

Calling all Wallingford do-gooder ‘geeks’

Back in January, we told you all about the super cool Geeks Who Drink Monday night trivia at Blue Star Cafe & Pub (4512 Stone Way N.), where teams compete against one another to claim the top geek spot of the night. Now, the Wallingford COMMUNITY Senior Center (WCSC) is looking for a few good "geeks" to come and join in the fun, and to help raise money for the Center. Geeks Who Drink is holding a special "Quiz for a…

Comedy Open Mic at Murphy’s

Wallyhood is pleased to introduce our special guest blogger and comedian, Barbara Sehr. When was the last time you thought about standing up in front of your neighbors and throwing out a punch line or two? There’s a word for that — a comedy open mic. Murphy’s Irish Pub, has become a proving ground for live comedy every Sunday evening at 8 pm.  The home of Wallingford’s Irish spirit(s), hosted a gaggle of comedians in its very first regular comedy open…

Murphy’s History

  • Post author:

On May 18, 1981, a year after Mt. St. Helen's blew, Seattle's first Irish bar opened: Murphy's Irish Pub. Go ahead, check your calendar: next Wednesday, that'll be thirty years exactly, and they're celebrating. When Chris Barnes and Dan Cowan originally opened Murphy's, it stood where Starbucks stands today, a half a block to the east (a Radio Shack stood on the corner of 45th and Meridian, where Murphy's is today). Dan left shortly after (and went on to open The…
