In case you weren't following the extensive comment stream on the Seal Team 6 Hits Meridian Park story, in which Wallingford artist and metalworker Marc Bissell took it upon himself to 'repair' the sailor sculpture in Meridian Park playground (it had lost its sword arm a few years ago) by welding on a machine gun, the episode is over. Several locals took it up on themselves to 'repair' his 'repair' and hacksawed off the addition. Forrest witnessed the removal and sent…

July Fourth at Gas Works

We did it folks. For the second year in a row, the Family Fourth is powered "by the People, for the People" (as One Reel says). Thanks to tons of local individuals and businesses, the show will go on this year. Here's the day's schedule: Noon-10pm. Free, all-day family-friendly extravaganza at Gas Works Park.   Activities include euro bungee, climbing walls, face painting, and kite making.  Food and drink vendors will be on hand. We first caught wind of the altered sculpture on Twitter, in a tweet from Jeanne: "Look what some guy welded onto a sculpture at Meridian Park. And no, it wasn't the original artist." Yep, someone added to the sculptures that ring the playground at Meridian Park. (For some beautiful shots of the other sculptures, see Jeff Ng's photostream on Flickr.) This morning, we heard from the artist himself, who forwarded his note to the original artist: Hi Pat, Hope you are…

Last week we told you about the construction over at the former 7-Eleven spot on Stone Way and 47th. A few of you have even told us that folks over at the Post Office mentioned that Bill the Butcher and Zaw Pizza were planning to take the space, and someone in the Twitterverse actually had the chance to talk to a construction worker onsite. So we tried reaching out to Bill the Butcher corporate, and so far, no luck; but last…

Our coverage of Stella's dognapping continues, with many thanks to Mari, who sent us a clip of the Durn Good Grocery's surveillance camera footage. If you click on the (.gif) below the picture, you'll be able to see the truck go past the doorway. For those of you reading this in email, you'll have to come to the blog to check it out.

Wallybits: Crime Edition

A couple of crimes occurred this week involving car break-ins, shoplifters, and items stolen from the Good Shepherd Center. A reader tells us that her family's car was broken into during the middle of the day on Tuesday: My son attends Wallingford Child Care Center (42nd & Bagley).  On 6/28, at approximately 4pm, our car (while parked directly in front of the child care entrance on 42nd) was broken into. The window was smashed and two diaper bags were stolen.  Around the corner (on…

Wallingford Neighborhood Greenway Update

"Whaaat?" you ask. "I don't remember any discussion about a 'Neighborhood Greenway!' Nope, that's because back in January we told you that efforts were underway to plan and develop a bike boulevard in Wallingford, thanks to Cathy Tuttle of Spokespeople and SDOT (Seattle Department of Transportation) for funding. Well, a few things have changed since then, especially the term "bike boulevard" since this proposed dedicated east/west passageway applies not only to bicyclists but pedestrians as well, hence the new term: Neighborhood…
