Saw this posted by LatonaJack in the Wallyhood Forums, thought it was worth "promoting": If your kids have never seen a Lion Dance, most find it to be a pretty enjoyable experience. Perche No restaurant, just south of Kidd Valley & across the street from Bamboo Village, is celebrating their anniversary with a Lion dance around 6ish along with champagne and music from 6:30 to 9:30 Sunday evening. Seems an unusual choice of celebration for an Italian restaurant until you learn…

Last week, Eric Fisk, Wallingford Community Council President, brought us up to date on the Transfer Station renovation plans (Rebuilding our Dump) and noted that there was a community meeting to discuss it. Allison Hogue sends this report from the meeting: The North Recycling and Disposal Station stakeholders group met to discuss the process for moving forward with the expansion and rebuild of the transfer station and recycling center located at 1350 and 1550 N 34th Street and incorporating Carr Place.…

Police Activity at Wallingford Playfield

Wallyreader Jeff told us this morning that there was some police activity at the Wallingford Playfield, around 7:10 a.m.  A man with a sleeping bag was in cuffs and there were two police cars and some sort of police van. At this point, we’re speculating it may have something to do with a bank robbery in the U District yesterday.  According to the the Wallingford Neighborhood Office’s e-news, a bank robbery had taken place at Key Bank on 45th in the…

Free BBQ at Irwin’s

When we think barbeque in Wallingford, we tend to think of RoRo down on Stone Way (and then we get all drooly and glassy-eyed, then we shake our head and snap out of it). This week, though, we're thinking Irwin's, because Linda Fecher is celebrating four years as owner of Irwin's Neighborhood Bakery and Cafe by hosting a free sidewalk BBQ on Sunday, August 1st from 4 - 7 pm. Irwin's has been around for longer than that, of course. Back…

Green Lake Spiritual Center Opens

Green Lake Spiritual Center co-directors India and Steve Holden personally invite Wallyhood readers to the center's Grand Opening this Sunday, August 1st from 10am - 9pm. India Holden describes the center's purpose this way: "The center is loosely organized around spirituality (not of any one religion, it embraces them all), and is designed as a community center. We are making the space available for anything the community needs and wants on a purely donation basis.  People can do session work like…

Avila No More

Avila, the restaurant that Alex Pitt and Jared Carpenter opened just this past fall on 45th Street, has closed. A note on their Facebook page reads: Thanks so much to all our patrons, staff, and purveyors over the last year. Avila's doors are closed, but we created a lot of great times and great food, and had fun doing it! So sorry to hear that, Alex and Jared. We've had some fine meals there, and really enjoyed the experimental and playfulness…

Continuing our "dump" theme of the day, we got a note from the Tour de Fat organizers noting that they are still looking for a someone to volunteer to give up their car for this weekend's event: For the fourth year in a row, Tour de Fat is looking for volunteers to accept the swapper challenge. One volunteer in each city will give up their car and receive a hand-built Black Sheep commuter bike. The volunteer is chosen after submitting a…
