Every few weeks we point you towards interesting conversations going on in the Forums and the comments area, mostly so you folks who receive Wallyhood as an e-mail will get all jealous of the action you're missing and come join the fun on the web site. Of course, the biggest conversation probably in Wallyhood history has been over the SHARE homeless shelter moving into the Gift of Grace Church (see most recent post), but there's lots of other conversations going on,…
Cool, cloudy Labor Day and our family is on a "nature hike" in Woodland Park (yes, we like to take it easy). Underneath a very large, wide tree just uphill from the main parking lot we stumbled upon a secret sculpture garden built from broken branches and twigs simply arranged by balancing and leaning against each other and the tree. The beauty and ingenuity of this is breathtaking. It is as if a tribe of wood elves has crept in during…
Ask any adoptive parent, and they will tell you that discussing adoption with their children doesn’t happen in merely one, full-length conversation that’s planned in advance, and then executed and crossed off a list. Rather, it’s a lifelong dialog that begins from the moment parents adopt a child, and continues through a series of spontaneous questions and answers. Some adoptive parents, like Wallingford neighbor Lauren Goldman Marshall, create picture books for their young children to help explain how they became a…
Ever wondered what it's like to plug in instead of gassing up? Recently while snooping around, I saw a snazzy little blue vehicle parked across the street. Looking more closely, I realized it was a snazzy little blue electric vehicle. My neighbor Dave is its owner. Here's his story: We've known the folks at MC Electric where we bought the car for over five years. I approached them as a possible sponsor for the Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility Annual Dinner…
Much community discussion and debate has been sparked by the arrival of the SHARE shelter at the Gift of Grace church in Wallingford. One of the primary parties to the ongoing dialogue are those directly related to Huckleberry Forest Preschool, which is currently located on the ground level of the church. According to a Huckleberry preschool parent who contacted me this week, they have been discussing this issue and feel that they need to move forward to find a solution that best meets the needs of their children and the preschool community…
Mike Ruby needs your help. Recent studies show that tree cover in Seattle has declined dramatically, and Mike’s been working on a project that, once complete, will hopefully shed some light on how the trees of Wallingford have changed over the past two decades. Using two existing lists that inventory trees in the neighborhood, he wants to determine which of them are still around. To give you a little bit of history, back in 1992, two tree-minded people—Arthur Lee Jacobson and…
(Wallyhood welcomes a new writer, Shannon Scott) The new play structure has been delivered to McDonald School at 54th and Latona and is anxiously awaiting its installation. The Friends of McDonald School are in need of volunteers to assist in the installation process during the weekend of Friday, September 24th-Monday, September 27th. With the help of volunteers the new play structure will be complete and ready for inspection. This project has been funded by the City of Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund,…
