Seattle Tilth Alliance Edible Plant Sale: It’s Back!

As a long-time bumbling and small-scale Seattle gardener, I always looked forward to the annual edible plant sale sponsored by Seattle Tilth in Meridian Park.  For me and a few thousand of my close gardening friends, it signaled the true beginning of the growing season—right around the time when it is finally warm enough to leave the tomato starts outside to harden.  Like almost everything else that adds happiness (and way too many zucchinis) to the margins of life, the plant…

Wallyhood Crime Beat

Well, it’s been a quiet week in Lake Wallingford, my home ‘hood. So quiet, in fact, that like all legitimate big city news organizations, Wallyhood is compelled to fill the reporting void space with tales of flashing blue lights and small crime. I was working the night beat at the Wallyhood Crime Desk. Actually…I had just returned from the Mariners’ home opener, in which they had soundly thrashed the much-loathed Houston Astros 11-1. I had turned in for the night, when…

Today, we continue our series of interviews with volunteers who make up the strong right arm of Wallingford service organizations.  Volunteers are a vital part of any non-profit organization’s operations, but this has never been more true than over the past two years. As COVID’s impact has left many in our community struggling, local non-profits have had to adapt and adjust their programming to meet the ever changing need. Most of us are aware that Greenhouse Gasses are emitted into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels and other human activities. These gasses trap the sun’s heat and warm the atmosphere and the oceans.  Therefore we get heat increases like the Heat…

A great local restaurant, Dumpling The Noodle, started business two months before the Covid lockdown.  But that did not stop them from developing a devoted following.  And now they have moved next door to the corner space at Wallingford Ave N and N 45th St.  They have sixteen tables and expanded food and beverages. Dumpling The Noodle features family-style Chinese food specializing in dumpling and noodle dishes, as well as noodle soups. They have a great assortment of vegan and gluten-free options.…

Meridian Playground was once the orchard for the Good Sisters of the Home of the Good Shepherd. Some of the original fruit trees remain. The Friends of Meridian Playground (FOMP) propose to replant fruit trees to fill in for some that are now missing. The Seattle Dept of Parks and Recreation has agreed, so now the question is how many and where.  FOMP is asking for your opinion through an online survey. We have lost 28 of the trees that were…
