Hamilton’s Community Celebration

While Saturday’s Community Celebration at Hamilton International Middle School had a little lower turnout than the ribbon cutting ceremony, there were still plenty of students eager to show parents their lockers and classrooms during the open house. Visitors had access to all three floors of the school and were treated to the sounds of Hamilton’s marimba ensemble on the outside courts, as well as the jazz band that played in their own classroom on the ground floor. Have a look inside the…

Cubes Cubed

Okay, I know cars are evil.  They spawn obesity, strip malls, suburbs, social isolation, oil wars, pollution, and the destruction of the atmopshere. But sometimes, they're so darn cute! Witness these darling Nissan Cubes cropping up around the neighborhood.  A trend?

Hurley House

Walk into Joe's house, and you can see through walls. You may remember the spot the house stands on: right across from Mosaic Coffeehouse, between 1st and 2nd Ave NE, we covered back in early 2009 when they knocked down the tiny old house that stood on the property previously. We can't find a link to our post from the time, but Google Maps remembers what it looks like, and if you want a piece of it, just head down to…

Can You Spare a (Free) Dime?

This arrived in our Wallyhood inbox some weeks ago and it was so lovely we had to share: Hello, While waiting at the 45th street crosswalk in front of QFC Saturday, an elderly man asked me to look at the curb that separates the QFC parking lot from the sidewalk. That started a lengthy, disjointed, yet still interesting, trail of stories.  They ranged from someone tearing his shirts in the laundry room where he lives, to his Dad being a cop in the 'hood, to…

Hula hoops and devil sticks

During one of my daily walks this week, I spotted this flier next to the east entrance of the Wallingford Playfield.  Not only was I drawn to the elaborate detail on the flier, but I was intrigued by the items listed as missing:  hula hoops, frisbees, and devil sticks.  I figured, someone took a lot of time to create such a flier, and so these items must have sentimental value for that person. When I got home, I called the number…

Wallingford weekend: Hamilton celebration and more

Sadly, the Home Tour isn't taking place this Sunday, but we hope Janet in the Wallingford Neighborhood Office has some homeowners willing to pitch-in for a January 2011 date.  Meantime, there's still plenty of stuff to do around the neighborhood this weekend, including Hamilton's Open House (Molly Moon's ice cream truck will be there, too). If you plan to cycle or run along the Burke Gilman on Saturday, oh, say between 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., watch out for the little ones from…

Fruits of your labor

Barb Burrill of City Fruit is looking for some folks to serve as fruit tree stewards along the Burke-Gilman Trail in Wallingford. City Fruit is working on a project with the City of Seattle to train fruit tree stewards to care for fruit trees in Seattle parks: The planning group for this new fruit tree stewards program has selected five pilot parks, one of which is the Burke-Gilman Trail in Wallingford, between I-5 and Gas Works Park. Each park will have a team of…
