Partial Closures of Gas Works Park

Ever notice how Gas Works Park sometimes smells like corn chips?  I usually notice it in the summer when it's been hot outside for a while, like during the 2009 Lullaby Moon.  Well, there's a reason for the smell. As Jordan wrote back in July: Gas Works Park is so named for the gas plant, tar refinery and incinerator that used to sit on that land.  Of course, when you’ve got all that nastiness boiling there for so long, it’s tough…

Changes Coming to Bus Route 44

Metro and SDOT are planning to make some changes to Metro Route 44, which travels along the NW Market Street/45th Street corridor connecting Ballard, Wallingford, and the University District.  Through funding presented by Bridging the Gap--the City’s voter approved levy for transportation and maintenance--the plan includes designs to improve the route's efficiency, with the goal to reduce travel time by 10% throughout the day.  Metro Route 44 is ranked as one of the most popular routes in the Seattle area, carrying…

The Chatter

Every few weeks we point you towards interesting conversations going on in the Forums and the comments area, mostly so you folks who receive Wallyhood as an e-mail will get all jealous of the action you're missing and come join the fun on the web site. Of course, the biggest conversation probably in Wallyhood history has been over the SHARE homeless shelter moving into the Gift of Grace Church (see most recent post), but there's lots of other conversations going on,…

Sculpture Grove in Woodland Park

Cool, cloudy Labor Day and our family is on a "nature hike" in Woodland Park (yes, we like to take it easy). Underneath a very large, wide tree just uphill from the main parking lot we stumbled upon a secret sculpture garden built from broken branches and twigs simply arranged by balancing and leaning against each other and the tree. The beauty and ingenuity of this is breathtaking. It is as if a tribe of wood elves has crept in during…
