Ontela in the News

Our good friend and fellow Wallingford resident Dan Shapiro popped up in the news recently on the widely read TechCrunch blog. Or, at least his company, Ontela did, amidst rumors that they're in a $60 million deal to buy Photobucket from News Corp's MySpace. TechCrunch's mercurial Michael Arrington huffed that Ontela has declined to comment, instead "sending us to voicemail". We're sure it wasn't personal. Dan was probably just out playing with his one year old twins at the McDonald School…

Reminder: Photo Contest

Remember, we're giving away two, count 'em two, bags of Pangaea Organica fair trade Wallingford roasted coffee this week to two photographers, one "regular" and one "mobile". The theme: Wallingford in Autum. Snap a photo, upload it wherever you like (but preferably to the Wallingford Flickr Pool) and post a link to it as a comment on this post (or one of the reminders that will follow). Deadline is Sunday, 10/25 at midnight. We’ll award two bags of coffee, one for…

Go Run or Go Zen

Paul Dorpat, neighborhood historian and itinerant photographer sent in a couple of beautiful shots from around the neighborhood to share: Paul wrote: In the fall - well all year long really - I refer to the trees along 44th between Burke and Wallingford as the "Flame Trees" and I have snapped them many times over the last four autumns.  The same is so for the Good Shepherd P-Patch.  The detail with the sophisticated rock path leading to two chairs and a…

As a follow-up to Sunday's story that Jupiter Music had been robbed, two commenters noted that Julia's had apparently been robbed the same night. In related news, My Green Lake has two crime stories this week: a mugging at 65th and Woodlawn (two suspects taken into custody shortly after) and car prowls at the Green Lake Preschool. The moral of the story: for your own protection, please don't own anything of value.

A Thousand Per Day: A Milestone

In reviewing our numbers, we realized that we crossed a little milestone on October 12: we have over 1,000 readers subscribed to our RSS feed (either via e-mail or something like Google Reader). That's not a count of the number of people reading us every day because some subscribers won't actually read every article and there are lots of folks who visit the site directly via the web instead of subscribing, but it's a handy milestone. Another handy metric is "Absolute…

Rachel Grimes and Gretchen Yanover

Looking through the list of shows at The Chapel Performance Space in the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave. N), we noticed that our old friend Gretchen Yanover is opening up for Rachel Grimes this Thursday, 10/22 at 8 pm. Gretchen's music is stunningly lovely and hypnotic, looped cello layered over and around itself in a warm soundscape and musical stroll. We don't know Rachel Grimes, but from the buzz we hear, we ought to. Unlike most of the shows in…

QFC Cleverness

Dan S. noticed that the sign inside the being-remodeled QFC has a nod to the neighborhood. It's not just your usual "excuse our dust" under construction sign: they've managed to mimic the style of the grand ol Food Giant lettering that's temporarily displaced from their facade:
