For those in Wallingford who have been missing the unconventional, obscenely whimsical concoctions of the Erotic Bakery, you will be happy to hear there is a viable replacement. Just a few doors west of where the iconic confectioner sold penis cakes and vulva treats for almost three decades, another unique, yet completely different (and G-rated!), style of bakery will open its doors on Tuesday, May 23. With dessert and pastry creations that will appeal to a much broader audience, Cubes Baking…

Editor's Note: The original image included with this story was of bicyclists on a bike lane alongside a street. This was updated to be one of pedestrians which is more in step with the content of the article. I live close to N 45th so I don't walk very often across N 40th or N 50th. I cross only when I'm taking the 26 bus or when I'm walking down to Gasworks or up to Green Lake. People I know who…

Many readers will remember the Hawaiian Breeze restaurant which closed a couple of years ago followed, shortly thereafter, by Shima Sushi which was owned by the same people. Now, the Breeze space will finally be occupied once again, this time by a new hamburger restaurant called Wallyburger. Wallyburger is the newest business of long-time Wallingford resident Gary Reynolds. Indulging his interest in music, Reynolds opened the Electrokitty Recording Studio, and is owner of the Revolver Bar on Capitol Hill. While the…

On May 16, 1942, seventy-five years ago today, Gordon Hirabayashi, a student at the University of Washington, was arrested by the FBI. Five months earlier, Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor, finally drawing a reluctant United States into World War II. Two months later, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, leading to the evacuation and internment of more than 110,000 Japanese people (more than two-thirds of whom were United States citizens.) "As an American citizen," he told scholar Ronald Takaki, "I wanted to uphold…

If this past weeks' weather wasn't enough to convince you that Winter has finally surrendered to Spring, turned in her sleet and shivers, and seen them bagged and tagged, then tucked in the safe where she can claim them in the Fall, if Wallingfordians frolicking about the May Pole in Gas Works Park left you still not entirely sure we had transitioned from the cold wet season to the tepid wet season, then get yourself to Meridian Park this Wednesday for…
