SPS Open Enrollment Closes Friday

I'll give you some good news and some bad news regarding April 15 (this Friday): The good news is that, while April 15 is typically regarded as the deadline to turn in your Federal Tax Returns, the last day to file for 2010 has been extended to Monday, April 18, in observance of Emancipation Day.  Woot! The bad news is that Friday, April 15 is the last day to enroll your kiddos in Seattle Public Schools this fall.  You have until…

Uptown Espresso Opens Thursday

Set your alarm clocks for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning, because that's when Wallingford's brand new Uptown Espresso will begin serving their Velvet Foam.  I met with Peter and Dow on Tuesday morning (two super-nice guys, I might add) who told me the official news.  Make sure you stop in and welcome Peter and Dow to the neighborhood, and let us know what you think! Uptown Espresso is located at 2300 N. 45th St. (corner of 45th St. at Corliss) Hours: Mon-Fri…

Host a Honker

Honk Fest West, the annual convergence of mobile, ruckus-making musicians, will return in May, including a May 14 stop at Gas Works Park here in Wallingford (the day prior, they'll be banging it up down in Georgetown and the day following they'll clatter their way to the Seattle Center). Where do you suppose travelling marching bands stay when they visit Seattle? Do you imagine that people who construct their percussion section out of 5-gallon buckets and used car parts rent out…

Misty Montaigne’s Night of Fabulousness

Ah, the traditional variety show. A little comedy, some singing, some male belly dancing, some balloon animals, a bit of acrobalance, some aerials. Did we mention dessert? OK, maybe not so traditional. This smorgasborg of entertainment is coming to OmCulture (2210 N. Pacific St) this Friday and Saturday, April 15th and 16th at 8 pm. We caught up with Wallingford's own Misty Montaigne for breakfast at Julia's recently and got the scoop: Wallyhood: So where did the idea for the show…

Community Street Clean-up

Spring is here, or that's what they tell us anyway. So it's time to clean up this little 'hood.  Time to beautify it for all those lovely evening walks we'll enjoy this summer.  Time to remove the trash in hopes that taggers will move on to other locales.  Time for the neighborhood to reconvene and catch up with one another. Whatever your incentive is, it's time to clean up. Wallingford Chamber of Commerce Vice President Greg Martin of Oom Yung Doe sent us…

Mighty-O on the Food Network

Spoiler Alert!  I'm going to tell you who won the Food Network donut challenge.  So beware if you haven't seen it yet! Helen told us last week that Mighty-O and Top Pot donuts would compete in the first ever Food Network donut challenge.  Well, they have.  And Wallingford has yet another winning Food Network chef.  That's right!  Sara Beth Russert is the nation's first donut champ!  Congratulations, Sara Beth! Actually, I don't know if Sara Beth calls herself a chef.  She's…

Redeeming Soles

Back in January, we told you about the "Day On" day at John Stanford, where students and their families spent Martin Luther King, Jr. day cleaning up their school and such.  On that day, the students also hosted a shoe drive, in partnership with Redeeming Soles, a nonprofit organization that provides footwear to the underprivileged and homeless living in Seattle. The shoe drive at John Stanford continues, and if you have a decent pair of shoes (no holes, clean laces, etc.)…
