Love Thy Neighbors

This Saturday, February 12th, is Neighbor Appreciation Day: February 12, 2011 will mark Seattle's 17th annual celebration of Neighbor Appreciation Day. It's the day when we reach out, create new bonds, and express thanks to those who live or work around us. The celebration began in 1995 when Phinney Ridge activist Judith Wood suggested that the City designate "a special day to celebrate the goodness in those around us and to reach out and strengthen our bonds to each other." Mayor…

Drunk Drawing

Ever been to a Boozy Doodle at Al's Tavern?  Nope, this isn't some ploy to get your Labradoodle drunk---though this is Wallingford, so we can see why, you know, people might interpret it that way.  Boozy Doodle is all about sketching with Wallingford's sketchiest every Tuesday night, beginning at 9pm.  We wrote about Boozy Doodle Drawin' Night last January, when Jordan spied the sign taped to the window at Al's Tavern.  Al's Facebook page nicely sums up a description: Come one,…

Ever have one of those moments that seems to define something about your life?  Or to reinforce some label you've given to your world? I'll give you an example. In 1992,  a small travel agency paid me to fly to Atlanta for an event where I would represent the company as one of their writers.  As I sipped a cocktail waiting for the plane to taxi down the runway, I thought, "Now I'm a real writer.  Paid to travel." The first…

Stand-off by QFC

We're hearing reports that the police have blocked off 46th Street to the west of QFC in Wallingford. We understand that they are negotiating with a mentally ill person who has barricaded him/herself in their house and may be suicidal. This is unrelated to the huge police sting that has been going on on Stone Way and 40th to ticket drivers who don't yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk or who speed. That's what we know now. Update 3:19 pm: the…
