Hamilton Middle School Grand Opening

Things have become much quieter over at Hamilton--signaling that, with exception of a few finishing touches, the school is ready for the big move.  According to a letter they delivered to homes in the immediate area, we’ll be seeing moving trucks shuttle furniture, equipment and books between Lincoln and the 41st and Densmore side of Hamilton this month and next, as crews prepare for the first day of school on Wednesday, September 8. The letter also announces two public events to…

If you've ever looked at all the lush fruit trees around our neighborhood and thought "it's crazy that there are people who can't afford good, fresh produce while beautiful fruit goes to waste", here's your chance to do something about it. Lettuce Link is a program run by Solid Ground in Wallingford that, among other things, coordinates a city-wide team of volunteers to harvest fruit from the trees of willing homeowners. Sadie Beauregard, Lettuce Link's Harvest Coordinator, gave us the scoop:…

You're blindfolded. You're holding a carrot against your head as if it were a rhinoceros horn. You're charging as fast as you can at a tomato painted on a piece of cardboard. Where are you you? Camp Tomato! Camp Tomato 2010, held Meridian Park today, marked the fifth running of the rhinoceroses, as organized by Seattle musician Jason Webley and coterie. It started back in 2005 as, according to the definite source of all knowledge, Wikipedia, "a light-hearted reply to claims…

Joule Has A Gem!

During one of our weekly family strolls last Wednesday night, I noticed Joule had a handwritten sign taped to their window, which read that they'd be closed for the evening. "Hmmm," I wondered aloud, "why would Joule be closed tonight?  It's Bastille Day!" Alas for the Francophiles, but cheers for the tender-hearted, Joule's Facebook page reveals the answer: To those who love Joule and have been waiting for our new bundle of joy, Pike Jun Jack Chirchi came to this world…

Kiana left a note on our Facebook page yesterday. We don't know the answer, but thought maybe one of you would: Yesterday morning and last week there were people dressed in costumes dancing on the 45th overpass at about 8:30 am. The costumes are quite elaborate and beautiful but there was no obvious signage to tell who they were. Does anyone have an answer to this costume mystery?? What say you, Wallingford?

West Wallingford Walk

Chocolati on 45th St. is playing the dance-sequence music from Napoleon Dynamite (Jamiroquai).  A guy in line suddenly busts out his moves. At the Chevron station, a driver is sitting perfectly still on the asphalt next to his cab with head bowed.  At first glance, it looks like he's having a cigarette but there's no smoke.  Prayer, meditation? The new Caffe Appassionato on Stone Way seems to be open, late hours?  No, a private party.  People drinking glasses of champagne, tables…

Marco! Pollock! Marco! Pollock!

Thanks to a Seattle Craigslist ad, we've discovered some fishy business happening at Gas Works Park this Saturday. Apparently, giant sea lions (made of cloth, with humans inside) will be scavenging the park in search of their dwindling food supply -- namely, Pollock.  A Greenpeace press release explains the problem this way: "Seattle based industrial fishing fleets are putting entire ecosystems at risk. Ships leave from Seattle with huge steel nets and heavy chains to trawl the bottom of our oceans…
