What in the Wallingford?

Hello and welcome to the first installment of Wallyhood's new weekly contest, which we call (cue the theme music) "What in the Wallingford?" The idea came from Paul Dorpat, who mentioned that The North-Central Outlook used to run a What-Is-It-Where-Is-It contest, in which readers would try to correctly identify an object from the neighborhood featured in a photo (examples below). It has that playful, homey, small town feel that we so love, so why not? So, same deal: each week, we'll…

Bus Changes, Effective 2/5

I got an email from King County Metro Transit recently (sign up here!) informing me of the following.  I love the language, so I'll just quote them here: Starting Saturday, Feb. 5, Metro will make routing and bus stop changes for approximately two dozen bus routes serving downtown Seattle to keep people moving during the long-term construction in downtown Seattle and the SODO area. Although the road closures and construction projects will be phased over many years, Metro thinks it is…

Izilla Slims Down

We chatted with Jude and Jen from Izilla Toys over the weekend, and they mentioned they'll be shrinking the footprint of their Wallingford Center shop by half in the next several weeks, moving out of the South side of their space entirely. "It's just too much space for us," Jen said, to which Jude added "the Wallingford store sells differently than the Capitol Hill store does, we have to adapt to that." They say Lorig, the Wallingford Center property management company,…

My Wonderful Evening at ‘My Wonderful Day’

In these gloomy days of late winter, sometimes a good belly laugh is exactly what you need.  And who better than an English writer to show the hilariousness of people going nuts in a repressive society and a damp climate? With that, here are my quick "pros vs. cons" of Green Lake's Bathhouse Theater's latest production, My Wonderful Day, by Alan Ayckbourn: Cons I don't pay good money to see the gut of a middle-aged man on stage.  Especially wearing superhero…

Public Interest Law Assn Seeks Donations

Amy writes: Hi Wallyhood! I am a faithful reader, and as such, understand the impact you have in getting the word out about good causes in Wallingford and nearby, so I'm hoping maybe you can help me. I am a member of the University of Washington School of Law Public Interest Law Association, which is a non-profit, student-led organization that funds public interest work and helps with loan repayment for law students pursuing a career in public interest law. PILA has…

Wallingford Lockdown

Last night, just past 10 pm, Jon Liechty tweeted "Cops have lower @wallyhood shut down with dogs out cornering a criminal" followed by the picture to the right of the action. He says they were looking for a 5'8" white mail in a blue sweatshirt, near Wallingford Ave and 34th / 35th. Eileen confirmed the incident and, in a separate tip, Fiona tells us they had Meridian shut down too. That's what we know. We like the way the community becomes…
