Seattle Mosaic Arts designs oven for Golden Beetle

When Maria Hines decided to open a new restaurant in Ballard, she asked her friend Claire Barnett, owner of Seattle Mosaic Arts here in Wallingford, to design, create, and install a mosaic on the kitchen's stainless steel oven. Given the restaurant's open kitchen floor plan, the 26 square foot mosaic will be seen by anyone sitting at the bar or dining at a table facing the kitchen in the Golden Beetle. I met with Christina Vaule--one of the four women in…

Geocaching in Wallingford

Awhile back, Jordan wrote a post on the art of geocaching--which is kinda like being on a cool treasure hunt--and he mentioned that there were quite a few geocaches right here in Wallingford.  Having an 8 year-old son with a penchant for adventure (although, really, don't the two go hand in hand?) I created an account on the geocaching website (geocaching.com), picked a couple of easy "puzzles" that were close by, plugged the coordinates on my GPS phone, and we set…

Aerial Wallingford, 1929

The Seattlest has a visual puzzle this week, courtesy of our old friend RoKet and the Seattle Municipal Archives: a photo of Wallingford taken sometime around 1929, but from where? The angle suggests from a height, but an airplane doesn't seem likely. Go on over, read what RoKet has to say, then speculate on where you think it was taken from. Wallingford to get a bike boulevard

Wallingford will soon get a bike boulevard, thanks to the efforts of Cathy Tuttle, founder of Spokespeople--an organization dedicated to safe bicycling in Seattle.   A bike boulevard is a designated street on which bicycles have priority over motor vehicles, and bikes are free to use the middle of the street while the use of installed "traffic calming" techniques (signage, traffic circles, stop signs at intersections) force drivers to slow down, and be aware of bicyclists.  Bike boulevards are the foundation…
