No December Dinner Hours at Varsity Inn

I have arrived, Wallingford.  Yes, I am now an official 'local."  I got a phone call today from my favorite waitress, letting Wallyhood know that the Varsity Inn will not be serving Mexican dinners for the month of December. The Varsity Inn will close at 3pm daily, effective today 11/29. Patty says that chef Rogelio will be traveling to Mexico in December, and that the Varsity Inn will not be open for dinner hours until he returns.  That's great news in…

Essential Lunch

A tribute to some women of Wallingford observed during lunch at the Essential Bakery: Pretty but faded Late middle-age settles in Blonde, blue-eyed beauty - Substantial as stone But sweet inside, stout and sweet As your big sister - Mom with little boy Thin, tired, doing too much Sit, put your feet up - Calm, leisurely lunch Sit alone with newspaper Life's work done, relax - (and me:) Small, anxious, scribbling What's in the notebook, missy? Blush - it's about you.

Wallingford Art Walk – December

This Wednesday will be the last Wallingford Art Walk of the year. With temperatures dropping to the low 40's, it may be tough to get a crowd out, but on the other hand, it's a great opportunity to do some local holiday shopping and Tara Shuttleworth, the new director, has been hard at working wrangling in new businesses, reviving participation from old and keeping the old standbys on-line (including Wallyhood sponsor School of Oom Yung Doe). She writes: Please welcome Fainting…

Dumpdate

Progress on the North Transfer Station (aka "Garbage Dump") renovation project continues to be made, at the rate one expects of such things. Andy Ryan sent us this update: Meeting Highlights Despite the cold and snowy weather, nearly 20 stakeholders and community members turned out at the North Transfer Station stakeholder meeting in Fremont last night. At this follow‐up to the October 21 workshop, Seattle Public Utilities presented five hybrid concepts that were developed based on feedback received at the October…

Long Weekend in Wallingford

(Updated Friday, 3:58 PM.) Here are some fun things to do in Wallingford this weekend, while you're digesting all of that food you've eaten yesterday: Friday, 11/26 - Sunday 11/28: Friday kicks off Izilla Toys' weekend-long, store-wide sale with 10% off all in-stock merchandise. Friday, 11/26 - 5PM-7PM: City Cellars (1710 N. 45th St.)  has its last wine tasting for 2010 and it's "Turkey Leftover Wines". Mmmm, mmmm.  No, wait, not leftover turkey-tasting wines, but wines that pair nicely with your…

Happy Thanksgiving

When we were growing up, we'd "work up an appetite" by taking a walk around the block with the family. When we moved to Seattle, the tradition changed to games with friends at the playground across the street: four square, kickball, whatever it took to get us good and hungry. This year, it looks like it's going to be sledding. Hope everyone has a warm place to spend this Thanksgiving. Thank you for spending this past year with us!
