Wallingford Art Walk gets a mascot

As soon as the clouds broke on Tuesday afternoon, artists Maggie Schneider and Siolo Thompson made a beeline to their latest project, a new mural for the Wallingford Art Walk.  The mural, which is located on the side of the building that houses Bottleworks and City Cellars, features a 20' tall robot, in mid-stride, amid a soon-to-be colorful backdrop. He'll be leaving a wake of flowers in his path when the mural's done, just in time for the May 4 Art…

Hiroki features work from local artist

While Tangletown's Hiroki (2224 N. 56th St.) is known for their delectable specialty desserts, here's one more reason to tempt you to visit their bakery: Wallyhood reader Abigail let us know about a unique sculpture exhibit by artist Kat Taylor, currently featured at the shop through the end of May. Three sculptures of women, including the piece in the photo on the right, are prominently featured in the shop alongside the eastern-facing windows, that Abigail described as "peaceful and powerful", and…

Misty Montaigne’s Night of Fabulousness

Ah, the traditional variety show. A little comedy, some singing, some male belly dancing, some balloon animals, a bit of acrobalance, some aerials. Did we mention dessert? OK, maybe not so traditional. This smorgasborg of entertainment is coming to OmCulture (2210 N. Pacific St) this Friday and Saturday, April 15th and 16th at 8 pm. We caught up with Wallingford's own Misty Montaigne for breakfast at Julia's recently and got the scoop: Wallyhood: So where did the idea for the show…

Opera and Art

No sooner had we closed the books on this week's edition of Wallingford Weekend, than two more events came across our desk, both, oddly enough, concerning opera: Zhixian Ren will be holding a reception on Sunday from  2 - 5 pm  at Wallingford Center featuring original paintings of ancient Chinese opera characters (at right). Also this Sunday, Perche'No Pasta & Vino (1319 N. 49th St) has Opera Night from 6 - 8 pm, featuring live opera music and piano. Enjoy it with a…

Wallingford student awarded for ‘Neighbor’ art

Mayor Mike McGinn and Seattle Councilmember Mike O'Brien were at Hamilton International Middle School yesterday to honor the top 15 winners of the 2011 Neighbor Appreciation Day Student Art Contest. Three of the budding artists are students at Hamilton, including one winner, Page Victoria Robinson, who lives in Wallingford.  The winning drawings reflect what it means to be a good neighbor, and Page was among five of the winners who were given a Crystal Award and art supplies. You can view…

Art Walk Wednesday

We're coming up on February, which means Wallingford Art Walk. For January's Art Walk, despite the chill, we saddled Baby Z up on our shoulders and wandered about the "downtown" Wallingford area: Wallingford Center, Not a Number, Fuel and such. There were lots of folks out on the street, but it wasn't clear how many were out for Art Walk. That said, we heard some good music in the Wallingford Center basement, had some good conversations with people we'd met on-line,…

Seattle Mosaic Arts designs oven for Golden Beetle

When Maria Hines decided to open a new restaurant in Ballard, she asked her friend Claire Barnett, owner of Seattle Mosaic Arts here in Wallingford, to design, create, and install a mosaic on the kitchen's stainless steel oven. Given the restaurant's open kitchen floor plan, the 26 square foot mosaic will be seen by anyone sitting at the bar or dining at a table facing the kitchen in the Golden Beetle. I met with Christina Vaule--one of the four women in…
