TEDDYxWallingford

Back in October, we were inspired by TEDxRainier, a day of fascinating and inspiring talks by local geeks, chefs, visionaries, authors and do-gooders. What we enjoyed about the day wasn't just the series of talks themselves, each worth the price of admission in themselves, but the conversations between that the talks inspired. Of the talks, one stood out in particular: Michael Hebb argued that how we share food together is as important as what the food is or where it comes from.…

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of the year and the first Wednesday of the month, meaning it's Wallingford Art Walk, and the organizers have a special treat to lure you out. They've recruited local artists to create a collector's set of art work for the backs of the brand new maps of participating businesses. Collect 'em all! Along with Art Walk fridge magnets, they'll be available at some participating businesses, but especially at the "starting point" for the Art Walk, Wallingford…

Neighborhood Matching Funds

I recently wrote a quick post about the 46th Street Mural Project survey.  A commenter to that article, "walkinroun," indicated s/he isn't really that fond of the type of public art the mural produced, nor some of the other public art projects in Seattle.  I have to agree.  I mean, I like the Lady Bug and the Sea Turtle traffic circles, but think we could've done even more with them.  So here's our chance to create something different: Seattle Department of…

We were strolling down Eastern Ave the other day, between 41st and 42nd, when we happened by this: What in the world? One of the advantages of writing a neighborhood blog is that is affords you the perfect excuse to walk up to the doors of perfect strangers and ask them questions. Which is exactly what we did. The contraption to the right is the product of Gerry Chu, a robotics engineer at the UW. Previously, he was a researcher in…

Sounds like a law firm, doesn't it? Well, if legal briefs were made of sculptural blown glass and subpoenas were crafted from vintage and contemporary porcelain tableware, it would be. But they are not. Legal briefs are made from snails and puppy dog tails (cut from live, squealing puppies), subpoenas are writ with tears on tar and Pozniak, Rak, Kraft, Rader and Wittlinger are the names of five artists holding a studio sale this weekend, yesterday through Sunday, Dec 12th, 10…

Photographer and Wallingford neighbor Alex Garland has a love for nature, which he's managed to capture in his stunning work.  You can see for yourself if you come to his photography sale at his home (4717 Densmore Avenue N., Apt. #5) this Sunday (12/12) and next Sunday (12/19), from 12 - 4 pm.  The sale will be held on his patio, which faces N. 48th St. Garland, a recent transplant from Denton, TX, spent 11 months traveling around Europe and South…

Local Artists House Shows

What, the Bizarre Bazaar at OmCulture this Saturday isn't enough for you? You're afraid that you may still have to go to Best Buy and Wal*Mart to fill out your holiday shopping list? OK, folks, relax, here's two, count them, two more opportunities to fill those stockings with art handcrafted by your neighbors: First, Paul Lewing, Gay Jensen, and Laurie Mortinson Lefebvres will be showing and selling their work from Paul's home at 4315 Burke Avenue N this Friday, Dec, 3…
